30 Jan 2012

SCG Foundation launched the campaign to promote reading culture amongst Thai society by sending out the Poster for National Children’s Books Day and International Children’s Books Day 2012

SCG Foundation, in co-operation with Books for Children Foundation, prepared a poster  for National Children’s Books Day and International Children’s Books Day for the eighth year to promote children’s reading, to remind Thai society of how important reading is for children and to encourage the reading culture amongst Thai society sustainably. The grand opening is set on April 2nd at Santi Maitri Building, Government House.

Suranuch Thongsila, Director and Manager of SCG Foundation said that “Reading is the vital tool to develop children’s knowledge and potential. Therefore; SCG Foundation has long organized various activities to promote children’s reading starting from early age. “Poster for National Children’s Book Day and International Children’s Book Day Program” is a part of the said activities. The poster acted as a symbol to remind Thai society of the importance of reading which is the root of all knowledge and education so that the related organizations will be willing to create the reading-related activities and to show the effort of Thailand in promoting reading culture worldwide as other members also launched the like poster each year. SCG Foundation will contribute the poster around the country without any charges.”

The campaign to promote reading internationally has long been raised as an important issue for more than four decades, dated back since The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) has appointed April 2nd as ‘The International Children’s Books Day’. The posters from the member countries have been prepared and sent out to children around the world to make them realize and appreciate the joy of reading.
In Thailand, the poster to promote the culture of reading has been launched continuously for eight year after the Council of Ministers has appointed April 2nd or the birthday of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn as ‘The National Children’s Books Day’ in 2005. It is to honor her as she is an avid reader and wrote several books for children since her childhood. SCG Foundation therefore co-operated with Books for Children Foundation as the member of The International Board on Book for Young People (IBBY) and prepared The Poster for National Children’s Books Day and International Children’s Books Day for Thailand’s sake. This year’s poster features the guest artist, Yossaya Ai-Siri of Children’s Literature Program, Faculty of Humanities, Srinakharinwirot University with the slogan ‘Reading Blooming Enjoying’.

Yossaya Ai-Siri, the lecturer at Children’s Literature Program, Faculty of Humanities, Srinakharinwirot University talked about her idea on poster that “The endless creative ideas start their first step when grownups took responsibilities in planting the reading seeds into children. Reading bit by bit and gathering experiences will help create the children’s endless imagination. For the curious children, ‘books’ will be the answers. For the fun children, ‘fairy tales’ will be their friends. Books provide friends and helps bounding the family’s relation.”
Anyone interested in distributing the posters, please contact SCG Foundation. Tel: 0 2586 3446, 0 2586 2547

SCG Foundation has been promoting the project ‘Early Child Development Through Books’ since 2004 to plant the reading habit into children since early age. For there is certain research proving that early age or newborn – 6 years is the best period when child’s brain can best develop given the proper ongoing stimulants, including reading habit.  The well-known programs are such as ‘Tales in the Garden Festival Program’, ‘Bring Good Books to Thai Children Program’, ‘Training Program for Caregivers in Child Development Center’ and distributing the short documentary to promote the ideas of early child development through books via various channels and TV programs.

SCG Foundation Preps Up Students to University Entrance
With “Art Camp by SCG Foundation””

For young and aspiring artists, SCG Foundation’s “Art Camp by SCG Foundation’ is the place for you to learn all about techniques and skills you will need when making an entrance into university’s art school. The Art Camp, created by SCG Foundation, is also to formulate stronger art education by providing art teachers the opportunity to hone their art teaching skills and new art-making techniques.

Ms. Suvimol Chivaluk, Director and Manager of SCG Foundation, says that “Thailand has so many aspiring young artists who wish to pursue their dreams studying arts in university. However, many of these students lack serious supports, many of them living in the faraway provinces and never got a good chance to hone their skills and see the world and information like those in the cities. Also, art schools are always expensive and that curb the opportunities for the students in those areas, reducing their chance even further when it comes to practicing their art skills so they can prepare themselves properly for the big university entrance exam.””

“This is the reason that SCG Foundation decided to team up with Thailand’s leading art teachers in organizing the “Art Camp by SCG Foundation” where all kinds of necessary art skills – from basics to art compositions and from drawing to creative arts – will be transferred to high school students who wish to make a university entrance into art faculties. However, the art camp is not solely about the students. SCG Foundation also sees this camp a good opportunity for the art teachers to hone their own teaching skills which are in fact the very important factor contributing to the success of the students. The camp will include seminars on art teaching skills and techniques along with new art education for teachers so they can enrich their own classroom with the new knowledge. We hope to create among the teachers a new level of pride that they can eventually help their own students materializing their dreams.”

The Art Camp by SCG Foundation is open for students in Matthayom Suksa 5-6 who would like to practice their art skills for the university entrance exams. To enroll into the camp, the students need to submit 2 pieces of their own art works including 1. A drawing of still models, fruits or hands on an A3 paper and 2. An art composition geometric drawing in colours on an A3 paper along with an educational certificate to SCG Foundation, 1 Building 30 C, Siam Cement Road, Bang Sue, Bangkok 10140 from now until 7th July 2013 (postal dates are finals). Students are advised to download the application form and study further information at www.scgfoundation.org or call T: 02-586-4177.

Students and teacher from each school will be selected into the Art Camp by SCG Foundation. They will participate in the free-of-charge art forum and seminar with the country’s leading art teachers led by Kru Sangkom Thongmee during 26-28 July 2013 at the Fountain Tree Resort, Pak Chong, Nakorn Ratchasima.

By giving the students a good opportunity to hone their art skills on the way pursuing their dreams is like crafting out the best of a diamond. This is the pride and joy of SCG Foundation because we have always valued the quality of human resources. Throughout the past 8 years that we have organized the Art Camp, we had over 850 art students and teachers joining us and 80% of those participants actually got into university’s art faculties as they had intended,” adds Ms. Suvimol.

Art Camp by SCG Foundation is another program perpetuated by SCG Foundation since 2004. The purpose of the program is to support the wishes of aspiring art students who seriously want to pursue their dreams studying in art schools of university. This is an opportunity for the Foundation to provide knowledge for better future of Thailand’s young generation. By giving them good opportunity to study, SCG is proud to be a part of their successful dreams in which they grow up to be good and wise as an important force behind our country’s future.
